Search engine optimization
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the work of making a website easy for search engines to find and understand, so it can appear when people search for what it offers.
Search engine optimization is how a business earns visits from search results without paying for each click. Google's SEO Starter Guide describes SEO as "helping search engines understand your content". The aim is practical: when someone searches for what you sell, your page should be the clear, trustworthy answer.
How it works
Google uses programs called crawlers to find pages, mostly by following links from pages it has already crawled, and adds what it finds to its index. When someone searches, its ranking systems choose which indexed pages to show. SEO makes each step easier:
- Technical: pages that can be crawled and indexed, load quickly, keep working when URLs change, and describe themselves with schema markup. Speed and stability are measured by Core Web Vitals.
- Content: a page for each question customers actually ask, answering it more clearly than the pages that rank today.
- Reputation: links and mentions from other sites and, for businesses that serve an area, reviews and a complete business profile. That last part is local SEO.
Google's guide says plainly that there are no secrets that will automatically rank a site first. Treat any promise of guaranteed rankings as a warning sign.
How it works in a business
SEO is slow to start and inexpensive to keep. New pages and reputation take months to build, but a page that ranks keeps bringing visits without a cost per click. Most businesses track three things: clicks from search, positions for the searches that matter, and the inquiries those visits produce.
